A few weeks ago, a lady reached out to me and asked, What advice do you have for married couples who arent Christians? At first I was speechless, and I didnt even know how to respond, but after thinking about it I replied, My advice is that without knowing the Lord, your marriage wont survive. The next few days something stirred up in my spirit, and I just knew I had to get this message out. I thought people need to know that you cant make marriage work, without believing in the one who created it.
Not only did God create marriage and a perfect plan for it, but He gave us the Holy Bible, His son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit that teaches us everything we need to know about it. I can testify that its only because of those gifts, that I am the wife I am today, my husband is the man he is today, and our marriage is better than its ever been before.
So here is 3 reasons why your marriage needs Him:
1.To learn how to love
There are lots of people in this world that will love you; your family, your friends, your coworkers, your church members, etc. but no one can love you like the Lord. The Bible says He loved us while we were yet sinners. Then He sent His son Jesus Christ to lay down His life for us! The love He gives is unconditional, limitless, never-ending, and never-changing. Because He is a perfect example of how to love, we can follow Him and be empowered by Him to love our spouses in the same way.
We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:9)
Love one another, just as I have loved you (John 13:34)
2. To learn how to forgive
If you ask any couple whove been married for a long time, what the key to a successful marriage is, they will tell you its forgiveness. Theres no one in this world thats perfect. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). So that means that no matter how much your spouse loves you, he/she will do something thats going to disappoint you. It might be hurtful words, anger, betrayal, lies, infidelity, etc. Whatever it is, you have to know what true forgiveness means and then be willing to do it. Gods word tells us that He forgive us of all our sins, He remembers them no more, and He doesnt repay us for our iniquities. God commands that we forgive our spouses in the same way.
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you (Eph 4:32).
He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us (Psalm 103:10&12)
3. To learn how to serve
When Jesus walked this Earth, He served every where he went. He even washed the feet of His disciples, including the one that would betray him Judas Iscariot. A few weeks after finding out about my husbands affair, I got down on my knees and I washed his feet. I did it because I wanted to serve him. Now to some people that may sound crazy, but when God changed my mind and changed my heart, I became more like Christ and I began to do things that represented who He was.
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45).
For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you (John 13:15).
This list could go on and on because everything we need to have a happy and healthy marriage is found in Christ. If you know someone who is married or is planning to get married, and they havent given their heart to the Lord, please take the time to share this with them. Every marriage will face challenges and hard times, but only the marriages that are being built on biblical truth and looking to God for the answers will survive.
Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great. (Luke 6:47-49).
